Flashy Spinosaurus

This will be my last dinosaur purchase for a while. I’ve got a backlog of figures to mod and mount on bases. I found this guy at a Publix supermarket for about three dollars, tax included. He’s “flashy,” by which I mean that the mold wasn’t registered correctly and there was a lot of plastic leakage during the molding process, resulting in excess “flash” and some off-level mold lines. He’s going to need a lot of cleanup. I’m still deciding whether I need to cut off the flash, or take a soldering pencil to the mold lines and try to resculpt the plastic. I’m pretty sure it’s polyethylene, which can be modeled while it’s warm. If I use the pencil sparingly, along with a hot knife attachment, I should be able to clean up the lines without losing too much of the skin detail. This is a Ja-Ru figure, and even compared to the Boley and Greenbriar figures, it’s on the low end of the detail scale. His tail is also a little too low, but that won’t be a problem once he’s mounted on an 1/8″ base. I wouldn’t have bought it, but I wanted a Spinosaurus because it’s one of the “big bads” in prehistory, much more dangerous for my RPG players than even a T-Rex. He’s got a lot of reach, dangerous claws (compared to Rex’s “baby arms”) and a sweeping tail attack. By the time he’s cleaned up, based and painted, I think he’s going to be an impressive figure.
